Discussion:
Union operation failure

I am trying to perform the union operation on two shapes and when I
perform the operation, one of them disappears. The operation is being
performed as I have many times with the shapes touching (both attached
to the same guide). One of the shapes has been created from several
union operations. I wonder if there is some kind of limitation to how
many segments a shape can have that is undergoing the union operation.

Any help will be apreciated

I'm not aware of any hard limit on the number of segments in the shapes
that would cause this behavior.

What kind of shapes are you trying to Union together? Some things are not
meant to be 'Unioned'. For instance, If I place a JPG on the page, and try
to Union it with a Visio shape from a stencil, I see the outline of the JPG
in the created object, but the graphic image is gone. This is by design,
as the Metafile type images (GIF, JPG, etc.) are not lines/curves in the
Visio shape sense.

Thanks for the reply Barb
The shape was created from basic visio shapes, rectangles and
circles.

I've tried a few scenarios, but can not repeat your results. I chose a
rectangle and a circle from the Basic Shapes stencil and used the Union
Operations and end up with a combined shape. It did not matter if the shapes
overlapped or not.

Is it posible that the shape that disappears is not a closed shape? For
Union to work, both shapes must be closed.

John I think I saturated the shape or something I had created a pretty
geometrically complex shape with probably 20 or 30 different
operations and several control point and vertices's tweaks. I was able
to go back and recreate the shape with fewer operations and had no
problems.
Thanks
